Gary Anderton, General Manager – Bosch Packaging Services, talks about what we’re looking forward to in 2013.

In honor of Thanksgiving we would like to thank all of our customers for their support in our fifth annual Customer Satisfaction Survey. Distributed every year in October, we donate 10 Euros to UNICEF for every completed response received. This year we had an overall 13% global response rate and because of that support were able to donate approximately $3000 to UNICEF’s Safe Water Saves Lives program.

To find out more about the Safe Water – Saves Lives program visit the Unicef website.

Although the Customer Satisfaction Survey is our primary way of gathering feedback from our customers please feel free to use this blog as a forum to provide us with your feedback year round by simply completing the Contact Form or commenting below.

Well-trained and motivated employees are the key to your success. Our comprehensive training concept is tailored to the individual needs of your team. Especially when working with complex packaging lines, it is essential that your staff is familiar with the different machine components and is able to make optimum use of them. We therefore closely coordinate our modular training concept with you and the engineers of our plants and offer you customized seminars, instructions and expert training courses.

With our one on one on-the-job (OTJ) training our trainers accompany your team during production runs and offer their professional advice on maintenance and changeover operations.

Our classroom training is a modular group course that can be held at your premises or at our in-house training center.* It is targeted for your company and the group that you need trained.

Computer based training (CBT)* is a multimedia training module specifically adapted for the respective target audience and the existing equipment. CBT is independent, individual and interactive. It is the ideal tool to refresh and deepen your knowledge and to maintain optimum line efficiency.

For more information on our training options contact us.

*Classroom training and CBT options only available for certain machines, please discuss with your sales representative or customer contact if this option is available for your machine.

With our online ordering platform not only can you get spare parts information and ordering capabilities around the clock but we also offer an Open Catalog Interface (OCI) and a Corporate Portal.

Using the OCI, product information may be transferred to your internal purchasing catalog or ERP system. This allows you to order parts via your company’s internal system while still being able to use the E-Portal information.

In the Corporate Portal, several location-specific E-Portals may be combined. This combination can be a big benefit for a corporation, or a purchasing organization. It enables an E-Portal user to manage the ordering process for several locations and still have access to the relevant information on all the spare parts.

For more information on the Bosch Packaging Services’ E-Portal contact your sales or customer service representative or visit the E-Portal site.

With production time now at a premium one of the first things cut is preventative maintenance. However, some preventative maintenance only takes minutes. Below we’ve listed a few things that can be done during changeovers or short down times due to up or down stream stoppages to ultimately bring you savings by preventing problems before they happen.

  • Remove the front cross jaw beam once a month and clean and inspect it for any signs of wear or trouble spots, then lubricate and re-install.  This will make sure that you will have minimal interruptions due to sealing issues
  • Make sure that all the lubrication points on the cross jaw housing are serviced with the proper lubricant and given a visual inspection for signs of wear.  For example, if you see signs of scoring of the cross jaw housing shafts you should make sure to have replacement seals, bearings, and shafts on hand so that the worn items can be replaced as soon as possible.
  • We all know that troubleshooting, repairs and fixes are under a time crunch, however it is important to make sure that changes made to the machine, especially as it relates to the electrical system, are properly documented and wires and components that are added or changed are labeled and identified so as to speed up future troubleshooting.  In addition it is also recommended to make sure that all terminal connections are still tight by checking the screw connections as some of these might have become loose due to vibration which makes them prone to poor connection.
  • Once a month remove the cover of the SVB 3601 cross jaw housing drive assembly and visually inspect the drive belts, shafts, and bearings.  Excessive dust from drive belts would indicate poor alignment or other issues that need to be addressed.  Turn the assembly by hand to make sure there are no tight or heavy spots in the mechanism which would indicate underlying mechanical issues. This would also be a good time to take a close look at the linkage arms to make sure that these have not twisted out of alignment.
  • Inspect all wiring that moves with each machine cycle on a monthly basis paying close attention to any chafing to the insulation of wires and cables and also frayed wires as these will ultimately result in wire breakage.

A Track and Trace system is a mass serialization solution for pharmaceutical and food companies that prints a unique identifying code onto each product after it has been packaged. This enables individual products to be tracked throughout the supply chain, from production to the end consumer, and helps manufacturers significantly reduce counterfeiting by ensuring products can be easily identified. The track and trace system can also support product efficiency, warehousing, and supply chain improvement strategies by providing real time assessment data.

Already proving successful with many manufacturers, our Bosch Track and Trace solution can be customized to meet unique needs, allowing us to offer a range of technologies from basic mark and verify systems, to complex tracking and tracing for complete packaging lines. It can also be combined with a checkweigher, labeler, or both, to eliminate the need for purchasing an additional machine.

The Bosch Track and Trace is designed to minimize impact on overall production output. Easy integration into existing packaging lines ensures print quality and speed are maintained. In addition, it offers the flexibility to handle many different product formats.

A key aspect of any continuous improvement strategy is the thorough capture and analysis of actionable and accurate, manufacturing performance data. OEE can support the implementation of continuous improvement strategies in your company by providing a reliable measurement tool. Improvements in changeover, quality, machine reliability, more, can be measured and improved utilizing OEE.

Because our system can gather information from up to eight different machines at a time, we are able to check your complete line and analyze the relationship between your machines. Also, with the combined efforts of our technical experts and your systems experts, we can not only measure your OEE but provide concrete improvement recommendations for your machine and supply chain systems leading to a more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing process.

For more information on OEE through Bosch Packaging Services download the OEE Consulting Brochure or contact us.

Having trouble maintaining the temperature in your wrapper can lead to inappropriately sealed packages, burned packaging and overall just a big quality headache. If you are experiencing a problem with your temperature control our technical experts recommend that you do a thorough check of your collector rings. Although other factors could also be contributing to your temperature control problem, these are some quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive things you can check and replace early in the process.

For safety reasons ensure that you have first disconnected power to the machine. Open the front panel and remove the guard.

First check the strength of the springs. If they are not holding the silver braids tightly to the ring, they could be causing your temperature control issue and would need to be replaced.

If the springs are still taut, check the silver braids for obvious wear. You will notice an obvious thinness to the braids and they will no longer be making good contact with the collector rings. Again, if you notice any of these issues its time for a replacement of the silver braids.

Next check the carbon brushes. Remember though, the caps on the carbon brushes are spring loaded and have a tendency to get away from you. Remove the cap carefully and check the length of the brush, if less than approximately a half inch that part will also need to be replaced. Also when checking the brushes (or when replacing them) check that the brushes are contacting the center of the rings. If not, adjust the ring assembly to the center the brush.

Also at this time make sure that all four wires attached to the end of the collector ring are secure and undamaged.

And last but not definitely not least, check to make sure the collector ring is securely attached to the shaft. The collector ring set screw should be tightened to 10-12 inch pounds of pressure.

While the collector rings are exposed and the power off go ahead and check the ring surfaces for any minor scuff marks as well. These can easily be cleaned up by carefully buffing them out with a standard pencil eraser.

If the temperature control issue persists contact your Bosch Packaging Services customer support contact to further assist you with the problem.

Cutting knives are essential components for the efficient operation of packaging machines. We have developed and manufactured our own cutting knives at Bosch since the inception of the first, hand cranked chocolate wrapper in 1906, but we didn’t stop there. We have continued improving on the overall design of our knives in order to provide you with the best product for your Bosch Packaging machine. All of our knives incorporate a diagonal cutting edge design that will significantly reduce the pressure exerted on the blade and significantly reduce wear and tear. This has proved the most efficient setup for both food and pharmaceutical packaging applications.

Material options:

Premium Tool Steel

Tungsten Carbide (offers up to 3 times the service life, compared with tool steel blades)

Available Cutting Edges:

Straight diagonal

Zigzag diagonal, 2mm and 3mm pitch

Zigzag diagonal, 2mm and 3mm pitch with overcut for easy tearing

Bracket, 6mm pitch, for very easy tearing

Available Dimensions:

Width: 3mm and 5mm

Length: 90 – 300mm

Special lengths on request

For flawless performance and maximum service life of our knives, careful installation and setup of the cross seal station are of upmost importance. As a general guideline we recommend you proceed as follows:

1. Remove the worn knives, anvils and shims

2. Check/adjust cross seal jaws for perfect mesh

3. Run wrapping material (without any product or knives and anvils, but with the heater on if applicable) through the machine and adjust jaw distance and pressure until you achieve the desired seal on the wrapping material and a smooth and quiet interaction of the upper and lower cross seal jaws.

4. Insert the new set of knives and anvils into the cross seal jaws with the minimum amount of shims underneath the anvil (0.1 – 0.2 mm).

5. Test run and if needed, increase the amount of shims underneath the anvil knife until the film cuts reliably in the speed range of the machine.

Shims are available in 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3mm thickness
